After speaking with several people I’ve decided to not restrict our online network just to alumni, but rather to open it to friends as well. So if you’re interested, you can register here, or go to http://jackmtn.ning.com.

You can post photos, videos, a blog, and more, as well as network with other likeminded individuals about trips, skills, etc. I hope to see you there.

2008 Jack Mountain Schedule Now On The Web

The 2008 Jack Mountain schedule is now live on the web, although we still have some gaps to be filled in August, November and December. Check it out for up to date information, including course locations and whether space is still available.

We're excited about our new base camp in Masardis, Maine on the banks of the Aroostook River, and hope to see you there soon.

Winemaking Workshop This Sunday

This sunday we continue our series of workshops on sustainability with a session on winemaking. Workshops take place at 267 Camp School Road in Wolfeboro and begin at 2 PM. There is no cost, but there is a suggested donation to the GALA Center of $10 per family. If you plan on attending, please rsvp by Saturday afternoon.

Acorn Processing Workshop Today

Continuing our series of sustainability workshops, today at 2pm we're running an acorn processing workshop. We'll be collecting and processing acorns into food, as well as discussing some great uses for the by-products. If you want to come there's still room, so give us a call!

Bushcraft Course With Mors Kochanski (11/3-4) Now Has Openings

Mors Kochanski will be here again in November, and due to several recent cancellations there are several spots in his Saturday-Sunday (11/3-11/4) bushcraft course that have opened up. I'm holding these for Jack Mountain E-News subscribers, so if you're interested you've got a week to let me know you want to attend. After that, I'll be opening it up to the general public. Just email me with your name and the email address with which you're subscribed to our E-News. After that we can worry about the paperwork, etc.

Sourdough Baking Workshop This Sunday

This Sunday we’ll be continuing our series of sustainability workshops with one on sourdough baking. The workshop starts at 2 pm. If you’re planning on attending, be sure to bring a container or plastic bag so you can bring home some of our sourdough starter.

Our sustainability workshops are free, but there is a suggested donation of $10 per family to GALA (Global Awareness, Local Action), a local non-profit working on sustainability and related issues.

Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk This Sunday

This Sunday we're offering the second in our series of sustainability workshops - a plant walk of the local woods focusing on common edible and medicinal plants. We'll also look at some of the poisonous plants of the area, and talk about creating a collection of plant pressings and how to take your knowledge of plants beyond a casual relationship to an intimate understanding using the system we've developed for our semester courses.

We'll also have our simple new bucket shower system available for people to look at in case they want to make their own. It's made from six pieces available at the hardware store for less than $25.

We'll start at our place at 2 PM. There is no cost for these workshops, but there is a suggested donation to the GALA Center of $10 per family.

First Sustainabilty Workshop This Sunday - Lasagna Gardening

This Sunday marks the first in our series of workshops on sustainability. We'll be building a lasagna garden bed, which is an effective way to turn a section of lawn into a food production zone in less than an hour. We'll meet at 2pm and put together a lasagna bed or two, then plant them right away. It should be fun and informative.

There is no charge for our sustainability workshops, but there is a suggested donation of $10 per family to the G.A.L.A. Center. G.A.L.A. is a Wolfeboro-based nonprofit organization aiming to provide a networking & resource hub for people who are working towards adopting a more sustainable lifestyle.

Free Wilderness Survival And Bushcraft Workshops At The Maine Wilderness Guides Organization Rendezvous - June 16-17

The Maine Wilderness Guides Organization 2nd annual rendezvous is taking place on June 16-17 at The Birches in Rockwood. On the 16th there will be a series of free workshops put on by the membership. I'll be running two bushcraft and survival workshops: from 9:45 to 11:00 and from 11:15 to 12:30. There will be many other workshops on a wide variety of topics. The MWGO has an incredible amount of skill, talent and experience among its membership, so you'll definitely want to put this weekend on your calendar. Check the MWGO website for more details.

Braintanning Class This Friday and Saturday, April 27-28th, 2007

This Friday and Saturday, April 27-28th, we’re going to be braintanning the deer hides I’ve stored over the winter. We’ll get the hides scraped on Friday, and, weather permitting, pull them on Saturday. For more on braintanning, check out this link.
