School Policies

Privacy Policy - We don't sell, rent, lease, lend, loan, trade, or make public your name or contact information. Ever.

Cancellation And Refund Policy - With cancellations more than 30 days in advance of the course or trip, the tuition, less the deposit, will be refunded. With cancellations less than 30 days prior to the start of the course all monies are non-refundable and non-transferable. These policies reflect the fact that we do not overbook, cancelled spaces are very difficult to fill at the last minute, and that the vast majority of costs are incurred in preparing for a course or trip.

Kids Policy - Courses - We are a family-friendly business, and understand the value of parents and kids spending time together outdoors. Our goal is to make all of our programs kid-friendly. We see great value in having kids learn bushcraft and outdoor living skills in their actual context, not a watered down version. As such, kids can join their parents on courses. Those under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Please be advised that we don't have activities planned for kids and that parents will be responsible for them at all times.

  • Kids under age 11 are at a tuition rate of 25%.
  • Ages 11-16 are at a tuition rate of 50%.
  • Ages 16-18 are at a tuition rate of 75% when accompanied by an adult.
  • Ages 16 and older may participate in courses on their own at a tuition rate of 100%.
  • Maximum ratio of 1 kid to 1 adult for courses.

Kids Policy - Trips

  • Kids under age 16 are at a tuition rate of 50%.
  • Maximum ratio of 1 kid to 1 adult for trips.
  • Not available with all trips outside of Maine. Contact us for information on specific trips.

Travel Insurance: We recommend that all participants consider purchasing travel insurance, which will refund your tuition if you choose to, or are forced to leave a course or trip early early, or cancel after the 30 day refund cutoff. Check out Travelguard.com and InsureMyTrip for travel insurance. They cover non-refundable, prepaid expenses such as travel and tuition.

Medical Insurance: We recommend that all participants have medical insurance.

Liability Release: Before the start of each course or trip all participants are required to have signed both a release form and risk acknowledgement form.

Pets: Although you love your dog (or other pet), there are many people who don't like them, and for whom it's presence would be a big distraction. Also, there is a lot of wildlife around the field school that dogs would love to catch. Several years ago someone brought a dog and it killed 7 baby snowshoe hares in one day. It wasn't being a bad dog, it was just being a dog. That's how their brains are wired. There's also a lot of wildlife that could prove a danger to your dog, including fishers, porcupines and black bears. For these reasons, and also because we're in the field for extended periods of time, we ask that you leave pets at home. It's not about your dog. S/he would probably get along with everyone. But while everyone can get by without the dog, some people might not do so well with the dog.

Tuition For Immersion And Certification Programs: For certification and immersion programs, tuition covers only the time spend with us in the field. Additional requirements necessary for certification are required, but are completed while at home or location other than the field school and as such we don't charge tuition for them.
